Yi-Ning Lo, currently based in Rochester New York, is a composer, pianist, and educator from Taiwan. Throughout her career, she has found ample inspiration for both vocal and instrumental compositions from literature, ranging from western poems to ancient Chinese poetry and Japanese haikus. These vocal works include Into a Woman’s Lunacy, About Solitude, Blackmud, and The Tune of Ru Meng Ling. Her current compositional project combines sounds, literature, and theatrical elements. In addition to vocal music, Lo has extensive experience writing for instrumental and electronic music. One of her ensemble works, Woven Veins, won the Christine Clark/Theodore Front Prize in 2019. This piece was later broadcast on the radio show “Music of our Mothers”, and honored in the fall journal issued by the International Alliance for Women in Music. Lo finds great enjoyment in composing pieces based on the topics of womanhood, dream, and memory.
Throughout her composition journey, Lo has won top prizes from many competitions. She was awarded the second prize of the World Championship in Composition in 2022, the second prize of the World Championship in Music Art in 2021, the third prize of the Robert Avalon International Competition in 2020, the Belle S. Gitelman Award in 2020, the third prize of the International Eduardas Balsys Young Composers Competition in 2019, and the Wayne Brewster Barlow Prize in 2019. Lo is currently pursuing a DMA degree in composition at the Eastman School of Music, where she studies with Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez. She holds a MM degree at the Eastman School of Music and Bachelor of Fine Arts from National Taiwan Normal University. As a pianist, she dedicates herself to performing both standard and contemporary repertoire, including pieces created by herself and other contemporary composers. She held a piano solo recital at the National Taiwan Normal University. She has performed in multiple recitals held by the Eastman Piano Department. Furthermore, Lo has also highly engaged in ensemble music and new music. She held a position of ensemble pianist in the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra and performed with OSSIA New Music multiple times. Lo has shown great passion in arts administration as well. She was the Lead Coordinator and Treasurer (2020-2021) and the Assistant Coordinator (2019-2020) for the Eastman Graduate Composers’ Sinfonietta. In 2021, she served as the Treasurer of the OSSIA New Music. Lo is currently enrolled in the Eastman Arts Leadership Program and works as an administrative assistant for BIODANCE, a contemporary dance company based in Rochester. |
